VICTORIAN RURAL DRAINAGE STRATEGY
In August 2017, DELWP commissioned the Federation to develop a policy paper outlining Aboriginal values in rural drainage. Working in partnership with Griffith University, the Federation consulted with Traditional Owner Corporations with the most rural drainage on their lands to develop the paper - Dja Dja Wurrung Clans Aboriginal Corporation, Gunaikurnai Land and Waters Aboriginal Corporation and Taungurung Clans Aboriginal Corporation - and presented findings for further consultation at an NRM sub-committee meeting attended by Traditional Owners from a further eight groups. The policy paper, with 8 out of the 10 proposed recommendations, was included in the Draft Victorian Rural Drainage Strategy.
Victorian Aboriginal Fire Strategy
In May 2017, the Victorian Government committed $250,000 to the Federation to work in partnership and co-design an Aboriginal Fire Strategy to integrate science with traditional knowledge and practices.
Victorian Aboriginal Procurement Policy
The Federation believes a State-wide Procurement Policy could be a game changer for the Victorian Aboriginal Economy. The Victorian Government has a budget of $10 billion to procure goods and services. If the number of contracts awarded to Victorian Aboriginal businesses was increased, whilst still achieving quality delivery and value for money, Aboriginal economic participation would be achieved without extra cost to the taxpayer.
The Federation has advocated this position since its inception in 2013 and welcomes the Victorian Government’s signal of intention to establish a policy in 2019.
